BCA Instructor Program Guidelines: Quality Instruction by the Billiard Congress of America

Certification Levels and Requirements
RECOGNIZED Instructor

Requirements:

This level gives recognition that an instructor possesses a basic knowledge of the sport and basic training skills in working with novice and intermediate players. A thorough knowledge of BCA rules must be developed at this level. To be eligible for advancement, you must keep up with feedback forms and have been actively instructing for a minimum of one year. Written Test:

A Recognized Instructor candidate must pass a written test.

Practical Test:

A Recognized Instructor candidate must train under the supervision of an Advanced Instructor or Master Instructor and pass a proficiency examination.


CERTIFIED Instructor

Requirements:

The candidate must be a Recognized Instructor for a minimum of two years. The candidate then must attend and meet the requirements of a BCA Instructor Training Course at a BCA Recognized Training Facility. To be eligible for advancement, you must keep up with feedback forms and have been actively instructing at the Recognized level for a minimum of two years. [ download form ]

All BCA Recognized Training Facilities will require written exams and records to be maintained at the facility.

Practical Test:

A Master Instructor must observe and the candidate must demonstrate their ability to use video equipment and evaluate students through the use of such equipment. The candidate must be proficient in BCA rules.


ADVANCED Instructor

Requirements:

The candidate must be a Certified Instructor for a minimum of two years. The candidate must have assisted a Master Instructor with an Instructor Training Course. Involvement with BCA programs is required. To be eligible for advancement, you must keep up with feedback forms and have been actively instructing at the Certified level for a minimum of two years. All BCA Recognized Training Facilities will require written exams and records to be maintained at the facility.

Practical Test:

While under the supervision of a BCA Recognized Training Facility, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach advanced player strategies and techniques and to recognize and correct deficiencies in advanced and intermediate player skills. The BCA Instructor Committee will review the written recommendations from at least one different Master Instructor and the Program Administrator. The Committee and Program Administrator will determine if an upgrade to Advanced level is warranted. All Advanced Instructors may also be called upon to assist with BCA workshops, write instructional articles and serve on BCA committees.

 
MASTER Instructor

Requirements:

The candidate must be an Advanced Instructor for a minimum of two years. The candidate must have assisted at least two different Master Instructors on separate occasions with Instructor Training Courses. The candidate must have significant additional experience and involvement with BCA programs, such as administering a BCA Recognized Training Facility, serving as a BCA Certified Referee or League Official, participating in BCA workshops or committees, or writing instructional articles or books. Practical Test:

The candidate must assist with the training of at least three BCA Certified or Advanced Instructor candidates, including lectures on teaching methods and giving written evaluations of the candidates' abilities. The applicant must develop, prepare and demonstrate the use of teaching aids and must assist, be evaluated and be recommended by no less than two BCA Master Instructors. These recommendations will be forwarded to the BCA Program Administrator and then to the Instructor Committee for final approval of certification to this level.


Feedback Forms

For all instructor levels, Student Feedback Forms from twelve (12) individuals each year (based on charter date) must be on file with the BCA Instructor Program administrator to be considered active.

For an instructor to advance to the next level, Student Feedback Forms for the current or prior year must be on file with the BCA Instructor Program administrator from at least 18 individuals. Forms from at least 30 individuals are needed for upgrade to Certified level under the accelerated program. [ download form ]

*Academy testing is required at all levels, and all memberships are renewed annually.
