BCA Instructor Program

The mission of the BCA Instructor Program is to provide quality billiard instructors who promote the game of billiards. 

 

Program Overview

 

The BCA Instructor program is dedicated to:

  • Training and certifying individuals to become qualified billiard instructors.
  • Supporting and assisting BCA instructors in their business of providing instruction services.

 

BCA Instructor Code of Conduct

This is the standard by which all BCA instructors provide services to students.

  • My primary obligation is to use my knowledge and experience to help my students improve their playing skills and abilities.
  • I will provide this service utilizing effective, positive teaching techniques.
  • I will maintain high professional standards in all aspects of instruction.
  • To ensure that instructional behavior is not misunderstood, situations that require some physical guidance properly position a students body will be preceded by a full explanation and a request for permission.
  • I will continuously strive to advance my instructional skills training materials.
  • I will contribute to the development and success of the BCA Instructor program.

The BCA Instructor Program recognizes four levels of instructors

RECOGNIZED Instructor (Entry Level)

In general, this level verifies that an individual possesses a basic knowledge of the sport, its rules and basic training skills.  Recognized Instructors typically work with novice and intermediate players.

RECOGNIZED Instructor Requirements:

To become a BCA Recognized Instructor, you must:

  • Successfully complete a three-day instructor training course by an Advanced or Master Instructor at a BCA Accredited Training Facility or BCA Certified Host Facility (There will be a fee charged by the Advanced or Master Instructor for the course.).  The course will require:

    • A written test.
       
    • A proficiency examination.
       
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the playing rules.
       
    • Basic understanding in video stroke analysis.
       
  • Submit the BCA Instructor application and fees.

Recognized Instructor Application Fees and Dues:

  • One-time application fee: $100.00 ($35.00 annual dues included)
  • Annual dues: $35.00

CERTIFIED Instructor

In general, this level is comprised of instructors seeking to enhance their knowledge, teaching methods, and curriculum.

CERTIFIED Instructor Requirements:

To advance to a BCA Certified Instructor, you must:

  • Pay annual instructor dues.
  • Be a Recognized Instructor for a minimum of two years.
  • Deliver a minimum of 60 hours of instructions (Tracking hours is done through the BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System).
  • Successfully complete a three-day instructor training course by an Advanced or Master Instructor at a BCA Accredited Training Facility or BCA Certified Host Facility (There will be a fee charged by the Advanced or Master Instructor for the course.).  The course will require:

    • A written test.
       
    • A proficiency examination.
    • Successful completion of a referee test.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in using a video camera as an instruction tool.

Accelerated Upgrade to Certified Instructor

A Recognized Instructor can apply for an accelerate upgrade before the two year period if he/she has delivered 100 hours of instruction (tracked via the BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System) and completed the three-day instructor training course.

Instructor Upgrade Requirements

The BCA Instructor Committee will review each upgrade application and accompanying documents to confirm the candidate's certification and subsequent upgrade.

Upgrade Grandfather Clause

Recognized Instructors in the program prior to Jan. 1 2010, will receive 30 hours of instruction credit for every year for which they have paid dues and turned in 12 feedback forms.

Certified Instructor Application Fees and Dues:

  • One-time advancement fee: $100.00.
  • Annual dues: $50.00.

ADVANCED Instructor

In general, this level is for instructors becoming more serious about advancing their career as an instructor.

Advanced Instructors may certify Recognized Instructors and upgrade Recognized Instructors to the Certified and Advanced Instructor levels.

Advanced Instructor Requirements:

To advance to BCA Advanced Instructor, you must:

  • Pay annual instructor dues.
  • Be a Certified Instructor for a minimum of three years.
  • Deliver a minimum of 300 hours of instruction since last upgrade (tracked via the BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System).
  • Assist in teaching at least two Instructor Training Courses (at least one with a Master Instructor).
  • Provide two BCA Instructor Confirmation of Ability Forms - of which one must be from a Master Instructor.
  • Successfully complete a three-day instructor training course by an Advanced or Master Instructor at a BCA Accredited Training Facility or BCA Certified Host Facility (There will be a fee charged by the Advanced or Master Instructor for the course). The course will require:

    • A written test.
    • A proficiency examination.
    • Completion of a playing rules test.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in using a video camera as an instruction tool.
    • Demonstrate ability to teach advanced strategies and techniques.
    • Demonstrate ability to recognize and correct skill deficiencies in intermediate and advanced players.

Accelerated Upgrade to Advanced Instructor


A Certified Instructor can apply for an accelerated upgrade before the three year period if he/she has delivered 500 hours of instruction (tracked via the BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System) and completed the three-day instructor training course.

Certified Instructors in the program prior to January 1, 2010, will receive 100 hours of instruction credit for every year for which they have paid dues and turned in 12 feedback forms.

MASTER Instructor

In general, this level is for instructors wishing to make teaching the game of billiards their full-time occupation.

Master Instructors certify and upgrade all instructor levels.

Master Instructor Requirements:

To advance to a BCA Master Instructor, you must:

  • Pay annual instructor dues.
  • Be an Advanced Instructor for a minimum of three years.
  • Deliver a minimum of 300 hours of instruction since last upgrade (tracked via the BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System).
  • Have been evaluated and recommended by at least two BCA Master Instructors.
  • Successfully complete a three-day instructor training course by a Master Instructor at a BCA Accredited Training Facility or BCA Certified Host Facility (There will be a fee charged by the Master Instructor or Training Facility for the course.).  Instructors will certify that you can:

    • Teach advanced strategies and techniques.
    • Recognize and correct skill deficiencies in intermediate and advanced players.
    • Formulate effective student evaluations.
    • Develop, prepare, and demonstrate the use of teaching aids including videotaping.
  • Have experience in additional billiard activities, such as a Certified Referee or League Official, Tournament Director, participation in workshops or committees, development of training products/techniques, or writing instructional articles/books.
  • Certify and/or upgrade at least 5 BCA Instructors.


Accelerated Upgrade to Master Instructor

An Advanced Instructor can apply for an accelerated upgrade before the three period if he/she has delivered 500 hours of instruction (tracked via BCA Instructor Program Lesson Tracking System) and completed the three-day instructor training course.

Master Instructor ongoing Requirements

Master Instructors are expected to inspire, educate, and upgrade all levels of instructors.  The ongoing requirements is to certify/upgrade a minimum of 5 instructors every 5 years.


Master Application Fees and Dues:

  • One-time advancement fee: $100.00.
  • Annual dues: $200.00.
