Americans have continued to purchase billiard equipment within that steady range each year since tracking began in 1988, with downturns in 2001 and 2005. According to the most recent Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) State of the Industry Report, 2005 wholesale shipments were $240 million.

Who plays? Since 1998, billiard participation has risen steadily from 32.3 million players to 36 million in 2005 as reported by the National Sporting Goods Association. Based on total participation, billiards ranks 8th, behind walking, camping, swimming, exercising with equipment, bowling, fishing and bicycling.
